Parlement of Foules – The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

The "uppa societay" in merry old pre-war England. Birth and appearance are everything, personal achievement is frowned upon. Algernon Moncrieff (Henrik Schäfer) and Jack "Ernest" Worthing (Florian Bänsch) are the personificated epitomes of parvenuism. They have the money, or in Algy's case the debts, to live their lives in luxury. They have carried their leisurely and careless existences so far they even invented imaginary relatives who allow them to escape from their families whenever they desire.

The only missing social achievement and feather in their hat is marriage. Love has been heard of but is not seen as a requirement for it. Fortunately, two lovely wives-in-waiting, Gwendolen Fairfax (Anja Taudte) and Cecily Cardew (Katalina Kopka) share their expectant husbands' views on marriage even though they wouldn't know romance if it hit them with three dozen red roses.

The major obstacles are mislaid handbags, a hideous future mother-in-law (Franziska Ptok), the amourous appeal of a Christian name, and the general air of twittishness/twitidy/twitousness/twitdom (please delete where inappropriate) of the over-bred and imperturbably upper-class snobs.

Stiff upper lips, fellows, chaps and jolly goodness are abound, as usual in Schnürschuh Theaterhaus.
